About us

Welcome to the official website of Chulmleigh Parish Council, the local governing body representing the historic town of
Chulmleigh, United Kingdom. Located in the heart of Chulmleigh North Devon, our town sits proudly on a hilltop
overlooking the Little Dart river valley. Although often referred to as a village, Chulmleigh is in fact a former market town with a
rich history, strong community spirit, and a distinct rural identity.

The Parish Council exists to serve the residents of Chulmleigh by representing local interests, supporting community wellbeing, and
helping to guide development while protecting the town’s historic and environmental character. We act as the first tier of local
government, providing a vital link between residents and higher authorities.

Our Community

Chulmleigh has long been shaped by agriculture and farming, and these traditions remain central to the town’s character today. At the
same time, a range of independent shops and local businesses operate within the town, contributing to a balanced and sustainable local
economy. This blend of rural life and local enterprise makes Chulmleigh a unique place to live and work.

Historically, Chulmleigh prospered due to its location on the main route between Barnstaple and Exeter. This once made it a thriving
centre of trade and social life, with up to eighteen public houses serving residents and travellers. While times have changed, the
sense of community and local pride remains strong.

Our Role and Responsibilities

Chulmleigh Parish Council works on behalf of residents to address local issues and improve quality of life. Our responsibilities
include:

  • Representing community views to district and county councils
  • Supporting planning consultations and local development matters
  • Maintaining community spaces and local assets
  • Encouraging community engagement and participation
  • Protecting the historic and rural character of Chulmleigh

Through regular meetings and open communication, the Council ensures that residents have a voice in decisions affecting their town.

History and Change

For centuries, the wool trade was the main source of wealth for Chulmleigh. The decline of this industry in the mid-18th century,
combined with the development of new transport routes that bypassed the town, led to gradual economic change. Despite this, Chulmleigh
adapted and retained its importance as a local centre for surrounding rural communities.

Today, the Parish Council works to balance preservation with progress, ensuring that any development respects the town’s heritage
while meeting the needs of modern residents.

Working with Other Councils

While Chulmleigh Parish Council operates independently, we recognise the value of learning from other parish councils, such as
Cranleigh Parish Council, which also serves a historic community with evolving needs. Each parish is unique, and our
approach reflects the specific character and priorities of Chulmleigh.

Looking to the Future

The Parish Council is committed to supporting a sustainable future for Chulmleigh North Devon. By encouraging resident
involvement, protecting local heritage, and supporting responsible development, we aim to ensure that Chulmleigh remains a vibrant
and welcoming place for future generations.
