Government Responds to Calls for Changes to UK Driving Licence Rules

The UK Government has responded to requests for a change in driving licence rules concerning motorhomes. The Department for Transport (DfT) has been urged to consider enabling Category B licence holders (standard car licences) to drive motorhomes weighing up to 4,250kg. This request comes because motorhomes often surpass the current weight limit of 3,500kg but stay under 4,250kg, limiting travel options for many Category B licence holders.

EU Directive and Its Impact on UK Driving Rules

The EU’s latest directive allows flexibility for motorhome drivers, irrespective of whether the vehicle is powered by petrol, diesel, or zero emissions. Under this new rule, EU member states can permit drivers with a Category B licence to operate motorhomes up to 4,250kg. However, this will only apply if the driver completes at least seven hours of training, passes a relevant test, or both. The training or test must cover specific safety topics, which are outlined in the directive.

Extension of Rules by the UK Government

In June 2025, the UK Government extended the rules for zero-emission vehicles, permitting those up to 4,250kg to be driven by standard Category B licence holders. This extension has provided an opportunity for many drivers of electric motorhomes to travel without the restrictions previously set by the law.

Public Petition and Response

A petition, signed by over 11,000 individuals, raised concerns about the current laws. It highlighted that Category B licence holders are currently only allowed to drive motorhomes weighing up to 3,500kg. The petitioners argued that this restriction limits the options for many drivers, particularly as motorhomes slightly above this weight are often automatic, which is beneficial for people with disabilities.

Department for Transport’s Response

In response to the petition, a spokesperson from the Department for Transport said: “The DfT continually reviews the driving licence rules. However, we have not yet evaluated the potential benefits of permitting Category B licence holders to drive motorhomes that weigh up to 4,250kg. Any future amendments to driving licence laws would undergo public consultation and be fully assessed for their impacts.”
